Purdue Global offers an online master of health informatics (MHI) program through the School of Health Sciences. The program is 100 percent online with no campus visits or internships required and takes 18 months or more to complete on a full-time basis. Part-time study is also available.
Purdue Global is an Approved Education Partner (AEP) and Academic Organizational Affiliate (OA) of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Through this approval and affiliation, MHI graduates are prepared to, and may qualify to sit for the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS) exam or the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) exam.
Additionally, completion of five specified courses may qualify the students to earn the Digital Health Leader Certificate, which is in candidacy status pending accreditation review by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). Students are prepared for and may qualify to sit for the Certified Digital Health Leader (CDH-L) and the Certified Professional in Digital Health Transformation Strategy (CPDHTS) certification exams.
As healthcare informatics specialists, graduates use technology and information to improve patient quality of care and lower costs. MHI graduates work behind the scenes in healthcare and public health to affect workflow, connectivity, data accuracy, and communication.
Graduates of Purdue Global may go on to careers in medical clinics, research facilities, hospitals, government facilities, data analytics firms, and policy organizations. Purdue Global is regionally accredited through the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
What to Expect from the Purdue Global Online Master of Health Informatics
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. No healthcare or other work experience is required. Additionally, GRE and GMAT exam results are not required.
Application materials include an online application and unofficial transcripts, with official transcripts required prior to starting the program. International students may need to submit verification of English language proficiency.
Study Plan: Start dates land four to five times per year, and courses run ten weeks each. The MHI program may be completed in as little as 1.5 years on a full-time basis. Part-time study is also available. Students should expect to spend 15 to 18 hours on each course per week. The program is 100 percent online and no internship or practicum is required, but students do have the option of completing an internship as an elective. Students complete a final project through the capstone course.
Curriculum: The online health informatics program comprises 48 credits over 12 courses, including leadership and management in healthcare; health information applications and systems; health informatics; project management of health information systems; clinical terminologies, vocabularies, and information standards; healthcare data analytics; information systems design and implementation; legal and ethical issues in health information; database design and SQL; and masters capstone in health informatics. Two open electives are also required.
Online Experience: Health informatics courses are asynchronous; however, weekly synchronous seminars are included. Purdue Global utilizes Brightspace (D2L) as its online Learning Management System (LMS). Here students have access to course syllabi, grades, course documents and readings, assignments, and assessments. Also included are online learning tools such as discussion boards, interactive learning activities, and database tools and templates.
Student services include access to the Academic Success Center, which offers assistance with writing, math, science, technology, and business. Students also have access to the Purdue Global online library, which houses a robust multidisciplinary collection of e-books, periodicals, and other publications. Professional librarians are available to assist students via email, live chat, and by appointment. Each MHI student is assigned an advisor and students can utilize the Center for Career Advancement (CCA) for resume writing and reviews, career planning, interview practice, alumni resources, and networking.
On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the Purdue Global online master of health informatics as the program is 100 percent online. Students complete a capstone project at the end of the program, which allows them to integrate and synthesize the knowledge and skills acquired through their coursework.
