Maryville University offers an online MHA with a general track or in one of four concentrations: health informatics and analytics, healthcare leadership, population health management, or senior services. The curriculum is based upon the updated key competencies published by the American College of Healthcare Executives, including leadership, professionalism, communication and relationship management, knowledge of the healthcare environment, and business knowledge and skills. Each competency area intersects with the others to form a multi-dimensional, well-rounded degree, preparing students to lead teams and organizations effectively. Courses focus on management, analytics, collaboration, and marketing and reflect the ever-changing healthcare landscape.
In addition, the MHA program focuses on student/student and student/faculty interaction and provides various means to make this possible. The curriculum is designed to be collaborative and interactive, including discussions, online chatrooms, and conference calls. Students build a network of relationships with faculty, peers, and industry professionals throughout their coursework experiences.
Maryville University is located in St. Louis, Missouri, and leads the way in distance education programs. The MHA degree is one of many excellent online master’s programs, and professionals can apply with or without prior healthcare experience. The only prerequisite is a course in statistics. MHA program graduates have gone into roles such as medical and health services manager, nursing home administrator, and hospital administrator, as well as other positions in insurance, pharmaceuticals, government, private healthcare organizations, and state or county health services.
What to Expect from the Maryville University Online MHA Programs
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the Maryville University MHA program must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for full admission. Students with less than a 3.0 GPA may be granted conditional admission. Candidates must submit an application, a personal letter (including graduate work qualifications), and official transcripts. No work experience, GMAT/GRE, or application fee are required.
International students must show English language proficiency through one of the following: a TOEFL, PTE, or IELTS score; an undergraduate degree from the U.S.; a college degree where the instruction took place in English.
Study Plan: The program can be completed in as little as two years, part-time. Most professionals take one course at a time. Students may start in the fall, spring, or summer.
Curriculum: The MHA degree consists of 36 credits. Six foundational credits include instruction in the healthcare industry and its impact on healthcare management and healthcare operations. Eighteen credits of core courses include courses in healthcare law, ethics, and risk management; healthcare financial management; population health management; healthcare human resources and organizational behavior; healthcare technology and information systems; and healthcare quality and performance improvement. Six credits of capstone courses include classes in leadership and professionalism in healthcare and strategic healthcare management.
General Electives: For the general track, students choose two courses from any of the offered concentration electives.
Senior Services Electives: introduction to gerontology; assisted living/senior services management
Health Informatics and Analytics Electives: healthcare analytics; healthcare informatics
Population Health Management Electives: managerial epidemiology; community health
Healthcare Leadership Electives: healthcare marketing; health policy and economics
A prerequisite for the program is a statistics course. If students have not taken statistics, they may be required to do so before starting the program.
Online Experience: The Maryville University online MHA programs offer all courses in an asynchronous format. Lectures are recorded and assignment due dates are posted. This means that there are no set login times or live virtual classes.
Faculty maintain office hours for online students and faculty and peers interact through email, video conferencing, online bulletin boards, instant messaging, texts, conference calls, and online chat rooms. Courses may be delivered through web conferences, teleconference, live streaming audio or video, recorded lectures, and written correspondence. Overall, students have access to all services the on-campus students enjoy, including academic advisors, admission counselors, career support services, library services, and 24/7 technical support.
On-Site Requirements: The MHA programs are 100 percent online. Students are welcome to participate in graduation on campus.
