Best Small and Midsize Companies for Healthcare Administrators

Healthcare administrators remain some of the most sought-after professionals in the country. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the need for medical and health services managers is expected to grow 32 percent between 2020 and 2030, a rate that’s four times the national average for all professions. This is a well-compensated field, too, with median pay that’s over $100,000 per year. Against this backdrop, healthcare administrators can be choosy about where they work.

Small and midsize companies allow healthcare administrators to build personal relationships with the people they work with. Small companies are typically defined as those with fewer than 100 employees, while midsize companies have fewer than 1,000 employees.

But these companies are often overshadowed by major health systems, who are the biggest employers in the space, as even “small” health systems will have thousands of employees. Meanwhile, the startup scene in healthcare is largely tech- and pharmaceutical-focused, and without a deep need for healthcare administrators.

Below, you’ll find a list of the best small and midsize companies for healthcare administrators to work for. Here, “best” is defined by a mix of employee survey results, industry rankings, and national awards. Each company has under 1,000 employees and is actively hiring managers and administrators. And while some of the smallest companies on this list may only be hiring for one position, they can still act as a guide to the types of companies to look for in other geographic areas.

Agile Physical Therapy

Founded in Palo Alto in 2002, Agile Physical Therapy is a small but growing company focused on providing physical and occupational therapy through employer-based settings, out-of-network clinics, and in-network offices.

Today, they have offices in Palo Alto, San Mateo, Redwood City, Los Altos, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Employee surveys are overwhelmingly positive, and part of the reason why Agile has been placed at the top of so many different best workplace lists. The company is currently seeking an operations manager for its brand new San Mateo clinic.

Doctor on Demand

One of the nation’s leading virtual care providers, Doctor on Demand books patients virtual appointments with board-certified healthcare professionals. It has recently been acquired by Included Health, but as a division, it is still a midsize operation, with under 500 employees.

Employee surveys are resoundingly positive, with respondents saying they feel management is honest and ethical in their business practices. While there isn’t a physical facility to manage, there’s still plenty of administrative work, and the company continues to hire for corporate roles.

Ignite Medical Resorts

Ignite Medical Resorts is a midsize company blending medical rehabilitation with high-end hospitality. Healthcare administrators may find this a challenging but intriguing combination, with clinical programming, cutting-edge technology, and luxury service all factoring into their responsibilities.

Employee surveys are largely positive at Ignite, with 77 percent reporting it as a great place to work and the majority identifying the high levels of responsibility as a plus. Ignite is currently seeking a business analytics director.

Magnolia Manor Senior Living

First opening its doors in 1963, Magnolia Manor Senior Living now has eight locations across the state of Georgia. A Christian organization, their mission is to offer older adults senior living facilities that provide for their social, spiritual, mental, and physical needs.

In 2021, the Buena Vista location was awarded the Gold Excellence in Quality Award from the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), which identified them as one of the two best long-term care facilities in the nation. Magnolia Manor is hiring for several administrative positions.

Maine Veterans’ Homes

Created by the Maine Legislature in 1977, Maine Veterans’ Homes provides long-term care and rehabilitative services to Maine’s veterans and eligible family members. They have locations in Augusta, Caribou, Scarborough, South Paris, Bangor, and Machias. This is an independent, nonprofit organization separate from the VA.

In 2021, they were awarded the Gold Excellence in Quality Award from the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL), which identified them as one of the two best long-term care facilities in the nation. Maine Veterans’ Homes are currently hiring for some full-time and part-time administrative positions.

Maven Clinic

Maven is the largest virtual clinic for women’s and family health, but it’s still a midsize company, with just over 350 employees. This next-generation healthcare company is blending the digital and the physical to make the healthcare experience easier and fairer for all.

Employees agree: those who work at Maven report it as a mission-driven company where people care about each other. With company goals that include lowering healthcare costs and improving patient outcomes, healthcare administrators may also be drawn to the positive impact they can make at Maven. The company is currently hiring for several different administrative roles.

Preferred Home Healthcare & Nursing Services

Selected by Fortune as one of the top 20 best places to work in healthcare, Preferred Home Healthcare & Nursing Services has been providing home healthcare services to children, adults, and seniors since 1987. They have 15 locations across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

Approximately 93 percent of Preferred’s employees call it a great workplace, with almost all respondents citing a welcoming atmosphere and the ability to take time off when needed. They are currently hiring for several different administrative positions.

Primetime Healthcare

Primetime Healthcare places healthcare providers—typically, travel nurses—into practicing positions. Ninety-six percent of Primetime employees call it a great place to work, pointing out the community contribution and special events that go with it. Founded in 2012, they have approximately 388 employees, a figure which has doubled over the last ten years. Primetime is currently hiring for management and administrative positions.

Restore Hyper Wellness

Restore Hyper Wellness is a midsize cryotherapy company founded in 2015. Today, they have nearly 200 employees and over 100 locations across the US. Already at the top of many entrepreneurial lists, they’re also a highly regarded employer offering competitive salaries, flexible schedules, and a casual work environment with a heavily Gen-Z employee base.

This may not be the typical healthcare company that healthcare administrators are looking for, but that’s part of what makes this cryotherapy company so… cool. Restore is currently hiring franchise managers, marketing managers, business analysts, and operations analysts.

Unified Women’s Healthcare

Founded in 2009, Unified Women’s Healthcare is a midsize company focused on women’s health through OB-GYN physician management. As the largest physician management company dedicated solely to women, they deal with more than 2,500 providers across 900 locations, but an official roster of only 650 employees keeps them in the midsize category.

Approximately 82 percent of Unified’s employees believe it is a great place to work, with many citing the sense of pride they feel for their work. Unified is currently hiring several administrators, managers, and directors.
