The Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation offers an online master of healthcare innovation (MHI) program. The MHI is designed to foster innovation, the use of evidence in decision-making, the restructuring of financial models in healthcare, and the use of technology, as well as excellent communication in healthcare settings, healthcare policy-making, and entrepreneurship. In all of these areas, ASU’s main focus is to prepare graduates as leaders in innovation and transformative roles in healthcare.

U.S. News and World Report ranked ASU’s College of Nursing and Health Innovation in the top 11 percent in the nation for its master’s programs. The College of Nursing and Health Innovation also has a partnership with the Mayo Clinic, and ASU’s faculty seek to create a collaborative, innovative, entrepreneurial environment where students and faculty think outside the box and approach problems in new ways. Because of this, ASU was recently awarded the title of “most innovative in the nation” by U.S. News and World Report. ASU has five campuses in the Phoenix, AZ metropolitan area and an undergraduate campus in Lake Havasu City.

ASU Online seeks applicants from various professional backgrounds for their MHI program and encourages prospective students to apply from backgrounds in nursing, business administration, health sciences, engineering, and journalism. Graduates of MHI programs have gone on to become consultants, healthcare educators, healthcare analysts, data analysts, and project managers, among other careers.

Admissions Requirements: Applicants must submit official transcripts, three professional recommendations, a graduate admission application, and application fee, a current resume, a personal statement and essays, and proof of English language proficiency.

Time to Completion: The program is designed to be completed in two years; however, students can graduate in one year by attending full-time.

Study Plan: Classes last 7.5 weeks, and the degree consists of 11 courses. Since two courses can be completed in one semester while only taking one course at a time, most part-time students take two courses per semester. Students can choose to attend full-time and take up to 18 credits in the spring and fall and up to seven credits in the summer. Start dates are offered in January, March, May, August, and October.

Coursework: There are 26 core credits required to complete the program, one elective (three credits), and a five-credit capstone final project. The first two courses must be completed before moving into the rest of the program and are offered every session: innovation and the individual and innovation methods. Core courses can then be taken in any order and include advanced principles and concepts of innovation, systems thinking in a complex environment, understanding and applying principles of evidence-based practice, IT for healthcare innovation, outcomes evaluation, healthcare policy and innovation, and financing for innovation. Students can also complete an optional internship. Notably, the capstone project is offered every session. This program does not have any specializations.

Online Experience: For the most part, classes are asynchronous which means students can watch recorded lectures at any time and complete assignments by the posted due dates. Some courses may have specific log-on times for particular activities or assignments. Some assignments and tests may only be available for a certain window of time (e.g., 48 hours). ASU’s online courses are taught using Blackboard and students are encouraged to use a PC or Mac, as well as a webcam, headset, and microphone to ensure they have access to all multimedia tools and resources.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the MHI program as the program is 100 percent online. Students are encouraged to visit campus and participate in graduation on campus if they desire.

Be sure to choose online under my location. Since tuition changes from year to year, prospective students should contact the admissions department of the program for exact costs.

Although ASU Online is already one of the most affordable universities in the nation, they still offer financial aid in the form of grants and scholarships, as well as federal work-study and loans. Students can seek outside resources to help pay for their master’s degree. Some employers also have tuition reimbursement for employees seeking a higher degree.
