Arizona State University’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law offers an online master of legal studies (MLS) with a concentration in corporate and healthcare compliance. This degree program is designed for non-lawyers in the banking, insurance, and healthcare industries who manage organizational compliance with laws and regulations. Topics covered include U.S. law, legal entities and structure, the interpretation of laws and regulations, company policies for regulatory adherence, and compilation and maintenance of compliance reports.

ASU maintains an extensive array of externship placement options, including relationships with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and the AZ State Supreme Court. ASU also seeks to provide meaningful and relevant opportunities to each student by offering over 250 courses from which a degree is customized. ASU has several campuses located in sunny Phoenix, AZ.

Applicants wishing to learn about laws and regulations but who do not practice law may apply. A bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Considerations for acceptance include academic background, work experience, academic potential, and career aspirations, among other factors.

Admissions Requirements: Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and submit the application and fee, official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a writing sample, a personal statement (1,250 words or less), and a resume (no more than three pages). GMAT/GRE scores are not required. International students must provide proof of English language proficiency.

Time to Completion: The program is designed to be completed in one year full-time or two years part-time.

Study Plan: This 10-course program consists of courses lasting 7.5 weeks. Due to the course structure, part-time students typically take two courses per semester while still only taking one course at a time. Students can choose to attend full-time and complete their degree in just one year. Start dates are offered in January, March, May, August, and October.

Coursework: The unique design of the corporate and healthcare MLS program allows for greater flexibility in course selection. Students are required to complete a course in U.S. law and legal analysis, as well as one other foundational course from a list of choices, including contracts, fundamentals of contract law, criminal law, constitutional law, civil procedure, business organizations, and intellectual property. The remainder of the courses are electives chosen according to the corporate and healthcare compliance concentration and the student’s career objectives. Courses may include health care industry compliance, tort law, administrative agencies and regulation, integrated legal principles & business practices, employment law, and advanced topics in HR & employment law.

Online Experience: ASU utilizes Blackboard as its online learning management system (LMS). Classes are typically asynchronous consisting of videos, recorded lectures, simulations, and time-specific assignments to be completed by the deadline. Courses may have synchronous activities with specific dates and times for certain activities and assignments. Students engage in online discussions through conferencing tools. Online learning tools create customized paths through online content to ensure individual comprehension. Academic integrity is promoted through anti-plagiarism software and other measures.

On-Site Requirements: The corporate and healthcare compliance program is 100 percent online and requires no campus visits. Students are encouraged to visit campus and participate in graduation on campus.

ASU Online offers financial aid in the form of private donor scholarships, federal work-study, federal loans, and a discount for ASU alumni. Students can also seek outside resources to help pay for their MLS degree. Additionally, prospective students should check with their employer about tuition reimbursement programs for employees seeking a master’s degree.

Tuition is calculated based on credits, at the published tuition rate. For programs with variable tuition rates, we use the rates for part-time students.
