Brenau University has a history of offering transformative education dating back over a century. The school’s degree programs are developed and offered by its vision of preparing its graduates for a life defined by appreciation of the liberal arts, scientific inquiry, and global awareness. Brenau University strives to make education accessible to a diverse student body, including first-generation students, U.S. military service members, veterans and their families, and traditional and nontraditional students.

The Brenau University Ivester College of Health Sciences offers an online master of science degree in applied gerontology. This degree program prepares students to care for individual older patients and geriatric populations.

The curriculum consists of interdisciplinary content that prepares graduates to serve in various ways. Content includes the subjects of psychology, nursing, occupational therapy, business, social work, geriatric care management, and more. The curriculum is designed to develop further critical thinking, leadership, management, mediation, communications, problem-solving, and research skills. Graduates may work in several roles, including geriatric psychologist, geriatric social worker, gerontology nurse, community health worker, and assisted living administrator.

The MS program is a fully online program and can be completed either concurrent with the pursuit of another Brenau graduate-level psychology program or as a stand-alone degree. Students can complete the 30-credit program in as little as one year. The benefits of completing this degree program include gaining hands-on experience with geriatric patients in the required capstone course, collaborating with and learning from student colleagues from diverse backgrounds, and developing the expertise necessary to expand current practices to include geriatric patients and populations.

Brenau University is a private, nonprofit institution. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) to award associate, baccalaureate, master’s, specialist, and doctoral degrees. Admission Requirements: To be eligible for the Brenau University MS program, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and submit an application, official transcripts from all colleges attended, a resume or CV, and a list of professional references. Students must have maintained a GPA of 2.5 or greater in all coursework, including that which was completed but did not ultimately result in the award of a degree. No GRE or GMAT scores are required for admission. Students pay no application fee for this program.

State Restrictions: International students are welcome to apply to this program. International applicants must submit an online application and official transcripts from each school attended. Applicants must have maintained a minimum 2.5 high school GPA or have earned a passing GED score. Transfer students must have a minimum 2.0 cumulative college GPA. Study Plan: This program is designed to be earned as a standalone degree, but students can concurrently complete another graduate-level psychology program. Students complete a capstone course consisting of either fieldwork or a major project as their culminating experience before graduation. Students may transfer in up to nine credit hours of relevant coursework. Students can typically complete the degree in two years.

MS Curriculum: The Brenau University MS program requires completing 30 credit-hours consisting of 21 credits of major core coursework and nine credits of electives. The seven courses that comprise the core coursework focus on topics including foundations of gerontology, cultural and social issues of aging, physical aspects of aging, psychology of aging, communication with the elderly, death, dying and loss, and a fieldwork experience or major project.

Students may choose from several courses to complete nine credits of electives. Elective courses include global health perspectives, aging and the family, aging in place, geriatric pharmacotherapy, mediation skills in aging, elder law, social policy and aging, and more.

Online Experience: Brenau University recognizes the demand for degree programs customized to the needs of diverse students. The online MS program allows students to complete their degrees without pausing their careers or reducing existing commitments to family and other priorities.

On-Site Requirements: Though the MS program is offered online, students need to practice applying their skills to develop competence and confidence for their future work. The required capstone course is a primary opportunity for students to apply their knowledge working directly with geriatric patients.

Brenau University strives to make its educational programs accessible to diverse students. One primary way to make education more accessible is to make it more affordable. The Brenau University MS program in applied gerontology features affordable tuition and potential access to federal financial aid upon completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Online students are also eligible for consideration for grants, including the Pell Grant and the Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant. In addition, students have recently also been able to seek out scholarship support through the Georgia Gerontology Society (GGS). Third-party scholarships are another potential resource for financing a study.

In keeping with its commitment to making education affordable, Brenau University also offers particular support to students of certain backgrounds. For example, Brenau provides a 10 percent tuition discount for veterans and spouses/dependents of active-duty U.S. military service members and a reduced tuition rate for active-duty service members.
