Ohio University (OU) offers an online MHA program for working professionals that can be completed in just two years, attending part-time. It covers topics such as healthcare policy and laws, healthcare finance, ethics in the healthcare field, quality assurance, human resources management, and strategic leadership. The MHA program is future-focused and collaborative, offering classroom discussions with faculty, peers, and other healthcare professionals that foster growing knowledge and a sense of community.

Professionals with two or more years of full-time work experience in the healthcare industry are invited to apply. The program is designed for those who want to advance into leadership positions with a clear understanding of the financial side of healthcare. Faculty members are leaders in the healthcare community and offer a wealth of knowledge, passion, and insight into current and long-standing healthcare issues.

Ohio University offers several excellent online master’s programs and is located in Athens, Ohio. Graduates of MHA programs may go on to positions with hospitals and clinic systems, home healthcare organizations, long-term care facilities, government organizations, pharmaceuticals, and consulting firms, among other opportunities.

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the online MHA program must hold a BS from a regionally accredited institution with a GPA of 3.0 or greater. In addition, they must have two years of full-time professional work experience in the US healthcare system, as well as excellent writing skills in English. GRE/GMAT test score submission is optional. Applicants should submit an application and fee, official transcripts, a current resume specifically focused on healthcare experience, three letters of recommendation, a statement of good standing (for current medical students), and TOEFL test scores if applicable. Students must also have an understanding of financial accounting and statistics, which can be met before beginning the program.

Study Plan: The Ohio University online MHA consists of twelve, three-credit courses that each last seven weeks. Students can graduate in about two years by taking one course at a time. Most students in the MHA program spend 20 to 25 hours per week on each class. Students may begin the program in the fall, spring, and summer.

Curriculum: The Ohio University MHA consists of 36 credits in twelve courses including introduction to the US healthcare delivery system; research and quantitative methods for health services; strategic planning and marketing in health services; leadership of health organizations; healthcare finance; information systems for health services; evaluation and quality improvement in healthcare; human resource management in healthcare; health policy; epidemiology in health administration; ethical issues in healthcare; and health law. If students do not understand financial accounting and statistics, they must complete courses covering this before beginning the program.

Online Experience: Blackboard is Ohio University’s online management system. Although most courses are asynchronous, some live sessions and activities may be scheduled. When sessions are live, students can choose the best time that works best for them. The curriculum is practical, flexible, collaborative, innovative, and diverse, allowing students to develop a well-rounded MHA education. Discussions between faculty, students, and industry leaders foster community, relationship building, networking, and teamwork. Faculty maintain live virtual office hours and host and participate in online discussions with students.

Ohio University students have access to 24/7 technical support. Each will be assigned an admissions counselor and student support advisor. Online students must have access to a computer with a high-speed internet connection, Microsoft Office 2010 or later (with Excel 2010 or later), and Mozilla Firefox. The university offers free virus protection to students, and they can purchase Microsoft Office at a reduced price. The distance education hub, eCampus, has more information for online students.

On-Site Requirements: The program is 100 percent online, but students are welcome to participate in graduation on campus.
