Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina, offers a fully online master of health administration (MHA) program that can be completed in just two years. An MHA degree focuses specifically on the management and operations of healthcare organizations. It includes courses designed to educate students with the knowledge necessary to run healthcare organizations and improve patient care cost, experience, and outcomes.

The MHA program is based on the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) core competencies which include leadership, professionalism, communication and relationship management, healthcare knowledge and expertise, and business knowledge and expertise. The program aims to impart the knowledge necessary to lead a healthcare organization successfully.

The MHA curriculum features hands-on experience that can be immediately applied to the workplace. Learning outcomes include the ability to evaluate healthcare expenses and create cost-saving measures; skills in streamlining systemic operations and implementing new processes; and knowledge of healthcare assessment and organizational policies.

Those with at least two years of healthcare experience and a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution may apply. Those with an MHA degree may go on to career titles such as chief operating officer, VP of administration, chief nurse executive, director of practice management, health information manager, and other high-level positions.

What to Expect from the Queens University Online MHA

Admission Requirements: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution or an international equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 3.0, and at least two years of work experience in a healthcare organization. There is no GRE/GMAT required or application fee to apply. Application materials include an online application, two letters of reference outlining their educational background and work experience, official transcripts, a resume, and a career statement with career goals.

International students must submit transcript translations through World Education Services, including original transcripts, as well as TOEFL or IELTS test scores.

Probational admission is open to those with less than a 3.0 GPA; however, these applicants must have five years of managerial experience with a healthcare organization and earn a B or higher in their first two courses.

Study Plan: The Queens University online MHA begins in the fall, spring, or summer. The program can be completed in about two years. Students are able to take a term off if necessary due to other commitments. Online courses require 10-15 hours of coursework each week. Students complete a capstone course where they apply what they have learned throughout the program by writing strategic and marketing plans for a healthcare organization.

Curriculum: The Queens online MHA consists of 36 credits which include the following courses: health services organization and delivery, organizational behavior in healthcare organizations, financial management I and II, management and human resources of healthcare organizations, quality improvement in healthcare organizations, managerial epidemiology, research, and statistics, clinical issues in health services management, healthcare economics and policy, healthcare law and ethics, healthcare information systems, and strategic planning and marketing for healthcare organizations.

Online Experience: The Queens University online MHA is asynchronous, meaning students can be online according to their own schedule. This allows international students the flexibility needed considering time differences.

Queens University uses an online learning system called MyCourses, a state-of-the-art program offering several online tools for collaboration. These include social media functions, shared blogging, IM, online community tools, skype web conferencing for live collaboration between faculty and peers, and mobile access to assignments. In addition, the virtual course wall allows students to view required readings, assignments, course syllabi, discussion groups, and group assignments, as well as interact with peers.

Equipment requirements include a webcam, microphone, high-speed internet connection, a current operating system and browser, and Microsoft Office Suite. Notably, Queens online students have access to an academic advisor, an executive coach, an alumni mentor who can provide career counseling, faculty support, and round-the-clock technical support.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the online MHA as the program is 100 percent online. Students are welcome to visit campus and participate in campus graduation.
