Texas State University College of Health Professions offers an online Master of Health Information Management (MHIM) degree program that is nationally recognized, with a curriculum composed of current and emerging content from the health information management (HIM) field. As more and more of the healthcare sector’s operations go digital, the industry needs professionals skilled in working with digital data in its many forms.

The fully online MHIM program is designed for individuals seeking to support and enhance the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality of healthcare delivery in countless provider settings. Students may choose one of three degree tracks: a health informatics and data analytics concentration, a healthcare information security concentration, or no concentration.

The curriculum features several primary topics including health data content structure and standards, data security, privacy, and ethics, electronic health records, health informatics, data analytics and visualization, healthcare finance and revenue cycle, and more. Upon graduation students are well prepared to successfully pass the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) exam. Upon program completion students are expected to have successfully developed a number of competencies. Key expected learning outcomes include:

• Improve Patient Outcomes and Healthcare Delivery: Utilize varied information technology tools to manage, protect, analyze, and use health data to improve individual patient outcomes and enhance the quality and efficiency of healthcare delivery.
• Leadership in Ethical Data Practices: Follow established industry standards, regulations, and norms to ensure the ethical use of data in all its potential applications. Serve as a leader and teacher of such practices to colleagues and others.
• Contribute to Industry Knowledge: Enhance the knowledge and practices of the health information management sector through various practices, including research, knowledge exchange, instruction, and use of advanced data analysis and visualization programs.
• Develop Cutting-Edge Information Management and Usage Practices: Create innovative solutions for healthcare providers’ data collection, analysis and reporting practices.
• Fulfill Compliance Requirements: Support seamless healthcare delivery operations by ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and norms.

Graduates of the Texas State University online MHIM program are well prepared to work in various healthcare settings, including hospital systems, medical, dental, and specialty practices, government agencies, healthcare consulting groups, and software and technology vendors. Particular roles suitable to MHIM graduates include director of information and data analytics, information governance officer, and health information manager. Given the nature of their work, HIM professionals can also expect to encounter a lot of remote work opportunities.

The MHIM degree program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM).

Admission Requirements: To be eligible for the MHIM program, applicants must hold US citizenship and hold a baccalaureate degree (in any area) from a regionally accredited university. Students must complete an online application, submit a non-refundable application fee, a resume/CV, a statement of purpose substantiating the student’s ability and interest in completing the program, three letters of recommendation, and official transcripts from every institution where course credit was given. Students must have either a minimum GPA of 2.75 in their last 60 credits of undergraduate coursework or a GPA of at least 2.75 overall. Applicants must have completed prerequisite coursework in statistics, microcomputer applications, pathophysiology and pharmacology, medical terminology, and anatomy and physiology. No GRE test score is required. Clinical experience is also not required. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Domestic students living outside Texas should consult with the Office of Distance and Extended Learning. International applicants must demonstrate sufficient English language skills for admission. Students who are not Texas residents are advised to consult directly with appropriate staff to ensure they complete all requirements for admission. MHIM Curriculum: The MHIM degree is a 36-credit-hour program composed of 30 hours of core health information management courses and six hours of electives or a thesis option. All degree pathways are 36-credit-hour accelerated online programs. Examples of core HIM courses include health data content structure and standards, data security, privacy and confidentiality, research methods for HIM, and quality improvement in healthcare.

Online Experience: Course delivery follows an asynchronous learning model. Teaching faculty have substantial experience in various HIM topics. Instructors include tenured, tenure-track, and clinical faculty members. Content is provided via a state-of-the-art learning management system and varied online course delivery tools.

On-Site Requirements: Texas State University markets this online program as available to students around the world. Students can, therefore, expect to successfully complete it without the necessity of relocating to Texas.
