The University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) Collat School of Business offers an online MBA with a concentration in health services. Most students complete the program part-time in two years by taking two courses per semester. This allows for more flexibility for busy working professionals who must manage work, graduate school, and personal obligations.
Ninety percent of Collat School of Business faculty hold professional or academic PhDs and are industry leaders engaging in business in the Birmingham community. The online degree carries the same weight and status as the on-campus MBA and is taught by the same highly-educated faculty.
The program curriculum emphasizes leadership, organizational change, and strategic insight, empowering graduates to pursue high-level management positions in healthcare with careers in hospital administration, long-term care facility management, pharmaceuticals, healthcare marketing, health policy administration, human resource management, and health services management.
Business courses cover managerial accounting and finance, organizational management, managerial economics, quantitative analysis, and strategic cost analysis. Other topics include information technology, business strategy, corporate finance, operations and supply management, and strategic marketing. Health services courses cover healthcare marketing, health economics, and healthcare leadership.
UAB welcomes all students to visit its $37.5 million Collat School of Business building, which opened in 2018. Spaces include a trading floor, classrooms with state-of-the-art technology, breakout rooms, an innovation lab, team-based learning classrooms, sales role-playing rooms, a high-tech finance lab, an auditorium, a three-story atrium, a career center, and study spaces.
The University of Alabama Birmingham is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The online MBA – health services is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).
What to Expect from the UAB Online MBA – Health Services Program
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the UAB online MBA program must hold at least a bachelor’s degree and have completed precalculus class with a grade of C or higher in the past five years. No work experience is required; however, preference is given to applicants with two or more years of professional experience. The GMAT is currently waived and is optional for those who wish to strengthen their application.
Application materials include an application with three professional letters of reference, a statement of purpose, a current resume showing work experience, and official transcripts. International students must submit TOEFL or IELTS test scores and general academic credentials evaluations through ECE or WES unless their bachelor’s degree was earned at a U.S.-based institution.
Study Plan: The online health services MBA consists of 39 credits, including three health services courses. Students can complete the program in as little as one year on a full-time basis; however, most students complete it in two years by taking two courses per semester. Start dates are offered in the fall, spring, and summer.
Curriculum: Students take 12 credits in the area of tools and perspectives on business: accounting and finance for managers, economics for managers, management and organizations, and quantitative analysis for business managers. Functional core courses include strategic cost analysis and decision-making; information technology and business strategy; marketing strategy; operations and supply management; and topics in corporate finance.
Health services courses include healthcare marketing, leadership, and health economics. Students can also substitute a healthcare innovation directed study for one of the health services courses. Finally, a capstone course in strategic management completes the program.
Online Experience: The UAB MBA is 100 percent online, and courses are delivered asynchronously without required live sessions. Students can view course lectures, videos, and materials on their own timetable within assignment deadlines. As most MBA students work full-time, the asynchronous course delivery offers more flexibility to continue working while earning an MBA.
UAB utilizes Canvas to deliver its online content, which includes Citrix GoToMeeting/GoToTraining as an online collaboration platform, and the Respondus Lockdown Browser for testing. Students must have access to a personal computer or laptop, speakers and a headset, and a high-speed internet connection.
On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the UAB online MBA, as the program is 100 percent online.
