What to Expect from the Online EMHA and Graduate Certificates

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the EMHA and graduate certificate programs must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution. Applicants must submit an online application; official transcripts from undergraduate and graduate work; three references detailing their academic readiness, work ethic and habits, and interpersonal communication skills; a resume; and a written statement of academic and professional goals.

Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate work and two years of work experience. International applicants must submit TOEFL test scores and have all relevant documentation evaluated such as foreign transcripts and degrees. No work experience or GMAT/GRE is required. Applications are accepted throughout the year.

Study Plan: The EMHA from UC can be completed in less than two years. Students take two or three seven-week courses per term. Terms last 14 weeks. Most courses consist of three credits. For the graduate certificates, students can take one to four courses per term or semester. The graduate certificates can be completed in 18 months or less, depending on how many classes students take per term. The typical completion time for working professionals is 18 months. Start dates are offered in the fall, spring, and summer.

EMHA Curriculum: The University of Cincinnati EMHA program consists of 40 credits and includes the following core courses: Health Systems Management 1: Organization & Delivery; Health Systems Management 2: Principles of Leadership; Health Care Finance 1: Analysis; Health Care Finance 2: Decision Making; Health Policy 1: Health Policy & Regulation; Health Policy 2: Legal & Ethical Issues; Health Care Marketplace 1: Health Economics; Health Care Marketplace 2: Strategic Success; Health Quality 1: Evidence-based Decision Making for Managers; and Health Quality 2: Total Quality Management. Concentration courses are Emerging Issues in Health Systems Management and Global Health Systems.

A capstone course, Health Systems Management, allows students to show what competencies they have mastered during the program. Each student’s capstone advisor assists in designing the capstone project and locating a practice-based mentor for the project. Students present their projects to faculty and peers.

Certificate Curriculum: The graduate certificates in health care administration, finance, operations, and policy and regulation all consist of 12 credits each. Required courses are as follows.

Health Care Administration: Required courses include Organization and Delivery and Health Economics. Students then choose two electives from the remaining EMHA courses.

Health Care Operations: Required courses include three of the following: Organization and Delivery, Healthcare Operations Management, Evidence-Based Decision Making, and Total Quality Management. Students then choose one elective from the remaining EMHA courses. 

Health Care Finance: Required courses include Organization and Delivery, Analysis, and Decision Making. Students then choose one elective from the remaining EMHA courses.

Health Care Policy and Regulation: Required courses include Organization and Delivery, Health Policy and Regulation, and Legal and Ethical Issues. Students then choose one elective from the remaining EMHA courses.

Online Experience: The College of Allied Health Sciences utilizes Canvas for online courses and communication. Students can view PowerPoint presentations and videos, participate in chat sessions and discussion boards with fellow classmates and faculty, and complete tests and quizzes. The program is completely asynchronous. Students must also purchase textbooks for courses when necessary, have a reliable internet connection, and log in at least once a day for announcements and assignment information.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the online MHA or graduate certificates since the programs are 100 percent online. Students are encouraged to attend the graduation ceremony.
